*Task Forces*
In Star trek, Fleets are divided into task forces. A task forces designation is always the fleet's number followed by the Task forces number, Task forces are further broken down into elements, the elements number is not normally recorded and is only used to denote what squadron a ship is part of (Eg, Task force 54 USS Cavalier 2nd element). On average a Task Force consists of around 20 ships divided into elements of 4 to 5 ships each and a task force is normally always commanded by a flag officer which is a Commodore and up in some cases this is not possible and a Captain can be given the rank of Fleet Captain effectively giving that Captain the temporary rank of Commodore however they are always referred to as Fleet Captain. A task force also has auxiliary ships that facilitate logistics and on occasion is assigned a Starbase which acts as its home port within its Area of Operation (AoO) (Which may not necessarily be the same as its fleets AoO)

*Flag Ships*
The term Flag Ship can mean a number of things, The Enterprise is referred to as the Flag Ship of the federation meaning that it is the example that all other ships strive to be and its the ship you send to showcase your views and ethics. More commonly a Flag Ship is the personal ship of a Flag officer starting at the rank of Commodore up to Admiral, a Flag Officer can "Move" his Flag to which ever ship within his task force he considers would have the best facilities to accommodate both himself and his staff, if by chance during a battle the Flag ship becomes damaged to a point it can no longer participate a Flag officer can move his flag to another ship allowing him to remain in the battle in order to better command his remaining ships. The Fleet Commanding Officer's (FCO) ship is always referred to as the Flag Ship in a fleet action and also listed as the fleets flagship on any documentation.
